Outlook: Coach Patrick Walsh is "excited to see how this group [2008 team] responds to a huge loss of talent from 2007 team. If pure talent is the judge of a team, we will be not as strong." The ever-optimistic Walsh acknowledges challenges with a large talent pool graduating last year, having only eight returning starters and bringing up a 6-4 junior varsity team to fill in holes. But there are reasons for optimism. Quarterback Cody Jackson returns for his third year in a starting role, and Defensive End Doug Caldwell has DI potential. Jackson produced 913 rushing yards and 490 passing yards last year. Additionally, Adonis Smith, the talented transfer from Oakland, could fill the hole left by 2007 outstanding running back DeLeon Eskridge. Jose Nuila and Mike Parodi return to the coaching staff this year, and 5 key juniors join the varsity team. As always, Walsh will depend upon players representing the core values of their program, being selfless and motivated toward group achievement. If everything turns out well, Walsh says 2008 will be a reloading year instead of a rebuilding year for Serra.
