This year, they will depend on their powerful defense for a successful season. The drillers return eight starting defensive players or, as Coach Golla notes, really 10 experienced defensive players. Outstanding junior runningback Alfonso Jackson, who is already receiving DI recruiting interest, will lead offense. Jackson was awarded all-State Sophomore Team last year. All-leaguers Jerek Johnson RB/FS, Tevin Jackson DE/OL, Kenny Wallace DT/OL and Emilo Cantu DE/OL will serve as the core foundation of the 2008 Drillers. Alex Mitchell QB/DB and Ivine Grant WR/DB gained some game experience last year. Overall, the Bakersfield Drillers will have eight new starters on offense. Coach Golla reflects on his expectation for this season, "We should be very strong [this] season. We potentially could be better than last year depending on how fast our QB and O-line can get real game experience."
