However, struggles on D, especially in league play where they allowed an average of 30.8 ppg, led to a tie for 4th place finish in the Century League and no invitation to the playoffs. This year, there could be somewhat of a reversal of fortune, as 4 starters return on offense and 6 on defense. Although the offense may not be quite as explosive as in 2007 (neither the starting QB, nor the 2000-yard starting RB returns), the new offensive coaches from Chapman College could provide enough wrinkles to the Vanguard playbook to keep them on the scoreboard with regularity. Anthony Daniel is likely to take over at QB, while a number of players appear to be vying for the RB spot. Coach Greg Olquin feels that his defense should turn into a team strength, with safeties Aaron Fittery and Ray Rocha, LBs Micheal Pineda and Scott Hemans, and Adan Ruiz and Jordan Walker on the DL. It's hard to see El Modena making a huge jump in the level of their play in 2008, but if the team can stabilize itself quick enough for league play, then they'll again likely be a borderline playoff team.
