The Golden Eagles, however, have a strong tradition of winning. Coach Casey Taylor defended his opinion that the team would be right back in the mix this year. "This team reminds me a lot of the 2006 team. We won the section in 2005, went 13-0, and only had 3 or 4 starters coming back. But we had a lot of players who didn't play as Juniors step up and play as Seniors. In 2006, we went 10-2 only losing to Cardinal Newman (who played Oaks Christian in the state finals) and Grant who went 13-0." Coach Taylor has a good basis for his argument. Outstanding players to watch this year include Mason Magelby QB, Joe Brunet LB/FB, Cole LaBar OL, Casey Cox DB/RB, Codey Gandy DB, Barry Nobles WR and Nathan Richmond DB/WR. Brunet was one of the leading tacklers for 2007. According to insiders, this team is one of the strongest ever in the weight room. And the Golden Eagles reload with a strong 9-1 junior varsity squad. Nevertheless, the coaching staff appears to have a long road ahead of them to make up for the lack of team experience and loss of exceptional 2007 talent. Taylor continues, "We will probably have 8 senior starters on offense again this year with 6 or 7 senior starters on defense. We really feel like the kids buy into the program. We feel like our schedule is one of the toughest in the section[…] We are 46-5 over the last 4 years, and we have made it to the section finals in 3 of those years. Our expectations are to be contending for the section title this season." Del Oro does have a difficult 2008 schedule. Aside from a strong league schedule, the Golden Eagles take on perennial powers Cardinal Newman, Elk Grove and Merced, as well as Idaho State 5A runner up Lake City (Coeur d'Alene, ID). |
