Outlook: Boasting one of the top RBs on the west coast in Cierre Wood (Notre Dame commit), Santa Clara finished 2007 in style, winning the Southern Section Mid-Valley division title in overtime. The Saints are moving up in competition for 2008 to the Tri-Valley League, home of Oaks Christian High School. While Coach Fran Fredette had cautious words about the move, he should feel optimistic about how young his team was last year. 18 starters return, including Wood (over 2600 yards rushing in '07!) and another ball carrier that could attract D-I interest, Svondo Bradley. LB Daniel Garcia will be one of the returning leaders on a D that has 9 total returners. An 8-1 JV team is also on the way to provide much needed depth. On paper at least, it appears that Santa Clara may have enough to immediately become one of the better teams in the Northwest Division. Whether or not they can challenge Oaks Christian remains to be seen, but they will have about as good of a chance as anyone else in the division.
