The San Leandro Pirates replace last year's Oakland Tech with Valley Christian (San Jose). Additionally, San Ramon Valley (Danville) and California (San Ramon) are expected to be very good this year. San Leandro returns 14 starters from last year. Outstanding players to watch include Ricky Aliifua TE/DE, Dwaine Simpson WR/CB, Charles Leno OT/DE, Magdaleno Meraz OL/DL, Travis Gardner QB and Cory Howard RB/DB. The Pirates have a veteran line and a deep core of running backs--a combination that will be difficult to stop. A new defensive coordinator and running back coach will help the players to compete even at a higher level this year. "We should be greatly improved with a year of experience at most positions. We have great expectations on our level of play for 2008," summarized Coach Bowers.
