Outlook: Lutheran High School likely feels like they let one get away when they lost to Poly in the Southern Section Pac-5 semifinals, 2-0. Aside from missing the opportunity to compete for the divisional crown, the winner of the finals would likely have been a lock for the CIF State D-II bowl game. As such, Poly advanced and the Lancers are left to reload for this fall... and reload they have. QB Bobby Wheatley wasn't the starter last year, but he did end up gaining significant playoff experience when starter Blake Hyepock went down to injury in that fateful semifinal game. One of his favorite targets will likely be WR Scotty Williams (an Army-West Point recruit). Also ready to turn some heads should be junior RB Exavier Edwards, who saw a great deal of action last year. Defensively, Lutheran should once again be solid with LB Mike Arakelian, DT Asuega Kapono, and DBs Davonte Anderson and Terrence Brown. It's unlikely they'll be able to match the remarkable 10.9 points per game they allowed last year, but they probably won't need to do so, either. Aside from the always tough Trinity League, the Lancers will be taking on Bullard of Fresno (Central Section) and defending Southern Section Eastern Division champs, North of Riverside, a member of the newly formed and powerful Big VIII league. Lutheran should be in the discussion for a CIF State bowl berth all season long.
