Outlook: Chaparral High School narrowly missed taking home the Southwestern League title last year, due to a 1-point loss to Vista Murrieta. A deep run into the playoffs capped off a very successful season. Well, that appears to just have been the beginning with 17 starters back, including junior RB Jonathan Diaz (over 1200 yards on the ground in '07) and 3 receivers with double-digit catches last year, Fontayne Fuga, Ronnie Kuan, and Zachary Stephens. (Diaz also had over 20 receptions.) Although a new QB will be taking the helm, he will be doing so behind a very experienced offensive line (winners of the Chino lineman competition) with Trevor Fox (Oregon commit), Nate Devan, Mike Sikorski, David Watkins, and Randy Patterson. If the Pumas are going to really make some noise in the state ratings, then they will have to improve a bit on the 23 points per game they allowed last year. With 9 starters returning defensively, they are poised to do just that. LB Andrew Taylor returns after nearly registering 100 tackles last year, as does DL Richie Mataafa. Many of the aforementioned offensive starters should return to make impacts on defense, too. Overall, this should be a very good Chaparral team that could challenge for not only the Southwestern League title, but also in what is shaping up to be an extremely competitive Southern Section Inland Division. Says Coach Tom Leach, "We expect to win league and CIF, anything else will be disappointing."
