Outlook: One of the schools most likely to benefit from the expansion of the CIF State bowl games to 5 is St. Margaret's High School. Last year's Southern Section Northeast Division run-away champion posted remarkable numbers. While most California teams gave up on average between 20 and 25 points, the *most* points the Tartans allowed all season long was 20 (they won that game by 50). In the playoffs, they gave up 13 points, total, over 4 games. While the Academy League was moved up to the East Valley Division as a result of that success, we may not see especially different results. 11 returning starters will be joined by a league-champion 8-2 JV squad. A new QB (David Mothander) takes over, but Coach Harry Welch states that he knows the system well. Speaking of bowl games and coaches, Coach Welch was the winner of the inaugural CIF State D-I bowl championship as the leader of Canyon of Canyon Country. That type of experience, already evident last season, could help play a major role for St. Margaret's. Among the Tartans other key players are SS Northeast Division lineman of the year, Chasen Smith, NG Jeremy Baileys, WR/DB Alex Brolic, DL Austin Holden, OL Colfax Shelby, OL Jeff Askin, and RB/DB John Murayama (all of whom were All-Academy League selections). The team is not without faults, however, as the offensive skill positions are going to be relatively inexperienced. Still, this team will be very difficult to defeat for any similarly-sized school, anywhere in California.
