They were the only team to defeat CIF State D-II champion, Oceanside, last year. A semifinal loss to San Marcos prevented a rematch in the San Diego Section D-II finals. This year's team appears to be much more formidable than that of '07. What is going to make this team so good? Well, for one, 13 starters return, including QB Ty Culver, RB Travon Van, OL/DL Anthony Larceval, WR/FS Trelan Taylor, and FB/LB O.J. Auimatagi. Next, the Highlanders already have 2 players verbally committed to Pac-10 schools, TE/DE Levine Toilolo (Stanford) and OL/DE Anthony Anderson (Oregon). Finally, their new Head Coach has a pretty remarkable track record of success. Those in the Los Angeles area will know this name well, Troy Starr. He had a 139-36-1 record while coaching at Taft High School, winning the 1998 LA City Section title and making the finals 7 times. One of the interesting changes for Helix is the move to D-I for the San Diego Section playoffs, which means that there will be no rematch with Oceanside and also that the Highlanders will likely open as one of the favorites to take home the divisional title.
