That was the 2007 Central Coast Section, Open Division Championship game, where Oak Grove of San Jose came away with the win, leaving the Mustangs to ponder what could have been. Coach Rich Hammond looks to the possibility of retuning to the championship game again this year. "We struggled to stop the best offenses in big games last season, and our success will be determined by how well we play defense in the big games," said Hammond. Having one of the most prolific offenses north of the grapevine, the team is focused on beefing up their defense as well. A good balance of returning starters will lead the team, including Jamie Jensen QB, Tony Travis S, Richie Sotelo S, Sean Hale WR, Dante Fullard WR, Lukas Fortino LB, Peter Guenther RB/DB, Brandon Elam DL, Ray Gonzalez C and Michael Botill OT. The trio package, Jensen, Hale and Fullard, return with their 400 yards per game average. Jensen passed for nearly 4300 yards. Hale and Fullard received and rushed for over 2300 combined yards. As a passing team this summer, the Mustangs won the 49ers NFL High School Player Development 7 on 7 tournament to represent the 49ers in New Orleans. They ended up going 5-4 against the best mostly "All-Star" passing teams in the nation. They also won the San Jose State passing tournament with 16 teams represented. The special teams and defensive secondary are talented and aggressive, giving rise to Hammond's desire to be sharp both defensively and offensively. |
