Outlook: Defending Central Coast Section, Small School Division Champion Seaside Spartans return 14 players from last season. Coach Alfred Avila provided us a very early report and several more recent updates helping us to provide a more accurate preview. Coach Avila said, "I expect my football team to play with everyone on our schedule. We have the toughest schedule in our section and we should be able to play with each team in pre-season." Indeed they have improved their schedule. The Seaside Spartans remove weaker pre-league teams replacing them with perennial football power Palma (Salinas), North Salinas, play-off rival Santa Cruz, and PAL-Bay League champion Menlo-Atherton. The Spartans return four starting offensive linemen, led by Miguel Dorantes, who should make big holes for runningback Chris Nguyen. Nguyen rushed for more than 1,000 yards last season. The new Spartans quarterback is young and will be learning on the fly along with replacements for the 2007 leading wide receiver. The defense will have no returning defensive linemen but return five defensive all-leaguers including MVP linebacker Greg Holland. Other players include Gino Catugda LB/FB, Ace Faatui WR/DE and Ahmad Carter WR/RB/CB. A new OL/DL coach has been hired. "I want to us to play at the top of our abilities in the pre-season so that we can dominate our league," concluded Avila.
